The first issue of our yearly journal is dedicated entirely to the Tea Horse Road: the network of stone and earth paths that for more than a thousand years carried pressed tea north from Yunnan and Sichuan into Tibet, and brought horses, wool and salt back the other way. Seven texts, translated into English, moving from the earliest archaeological traces of the route to the preserved trading town of Shaxi, from the languages that grew up along it to an interview with one of the last caravan leaders. Among the contributors are Chen Baoya and Li Xu — two of the six scholars who walked the road in 1990 and gave it the name it carries today — alongside Zhou Chonglin, Ma Cunzhao and Vivian Zhang. Photographs made by Eastern Leaves along the route over years of travel.
