At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, Italian music underwent a revolution worthy of the emergence of the École de Notre-Dame, the rise of Ars nova or Arnold Schoenberg’s development of serial dodecaphony. The invention of the basso continuo in Italy led to the publication – including in Germany, where this new style spread almost immediately – of organ parts added to the works of the great masters of the prima prattica, such as Palestrina and Lassus. Indeed, a cappella interpretation of the old polyphonies was no longer of interest. The aim was to save this heritage by modernizing it. Unlike today’s performers, who pride themselves on authenticity, the musicians of the time were more concerned with bringing the works of the ancients up to date.
