A simple, absolute gesture: a youth seated, wings open, quiver resting across his legs, entirely absorbed by the butterfly he holds between his fingers. This is Cupid at his most childlike and most true — the discovery of love. The high relief of the intaglio renders every detail with great skill: the curve of the wings, the softness of the body, the concentration of the gesture.
