Cassina
Red and Blue
The Cassina Red and Blue armchair, designed by Gerrit T. Rietveld in 1918, is a masterpiece of pure, rationalist form and a definitive expression of the Neoplasticism embraced by the Dutch De Stijl movement. Influenced by the artistic philosophies of Piet Mondrian, Rietveld sought to distill the essence of design through the harmonious use of colors and right angles, transforming this chair into a manifesto of modernist principles. Originally called the Slat Chair, Rietveld’s design evolved when he applied a new philosophy of separating constructional elements according to their function. The base was painted black, while the seat and backrest adopted bold, primary colors, leading to the iconic name, Red and Blue.
