Jianzhan bowl - Song Dynasty
Jianzhan 建盏 bowls shine with their shimmering charm thanks to their deep colours, iron-rich clay, and enchanting glossy glazes. Fired at high temperatures in the kilns of Jianyang City 建阳 in Fujian, their surfaces develop natural patterns such as hare’s fur (兔毫) and oil spot (油滴), where metallic streaks shimmer against a dark background. Each Jianzhan bowl develops its own unique pattern and texture randomly, making it an unpredictable work of art and a symbol of the endless possibilities of nature. Jianzhan bowls are crafted with a wide mouth and rounded shape to enhance the visual appreciation of tea and the reflection of light on the glaze. They rose to prominence during the Song dynasty, at the time of Dian Cha 点茶, the whisked powdered tea practiced as an art form by scholars and emperors.
